Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels have added another player to the roster for the 2023-24 season. With three scholarships available, the Tar Heels remained active in the transfer portal.
And it paid off for them.
On Thursday, former West Virginia forward James Okonkwo committed to the Tar Heels just weeks before he was set to take an official visit to campus. Okonkwo didn’t need a visit and instead is now joining the Tar Heels over Texas A&M and returning to West Virginia.
It’s a big pickup for Davis and his staff, giving UNC another option in the post.

Okonkwo averaged 2.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 11 minutes per game in his first season with the WVU program. He appeared in 31 games last season.
The Tar Heels have now landed five players out of the transfer portal with Harrison Ingram, Jae’Lyn Withers, Cormac Ryan and Paxson Wojcik all committing.
