The driver who struck and killed Jets coach Greg Knapp while he was riding a bicycle during the summer will not face criminal charges.
The Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office ultimately decided not to pursue charges due to a lack of evidence after the San Ramon Police Department turned the case over for the District Attorney’s office to handle.
“The Office of the District Attorney has determined that there is insufficient evidence to satisfy the requisite standard of criminal negligence on the part of the suspect driver,” the office said in a statement to the New York Post. “The dangers of distracted driving are well known. To truly promote road safety motorists need to be attentive drivers as well.”
Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident, according to the Post. The driver cooperated with authorities throughout the investigation.
Knapp, 58, died on July 22, five days after the accident that took place near his California home. Knapp was an NFL coach for 24 years, most recently as the Falcons quarterbacks coach from 2018-2020. Robert Saleh hired him to join the Jets during the offseason. Knapp had previously worked with quarterbacks for the Broncos, Raiders, Texans, Seahawks and 49ers.
