It requires a level-headed bunch to turn an early 14-0 deficit into a blowout win.
After allowing Northern Colorado to score the game’s first 14 points, the No. 8 CU women’s basketball team looked out of sync, but the Buffs never panicked and ultimately assumed control. Colorado worked its way into the lead late in the second quarter and left the CU Events Center on Thursday with a 78-56 victory over the Bears.
The comeback run was fueled in large part by Jaylyn Sherrod, who scored all of her team-high 16 points in the first half. Frida Formann (10), Aaronette Vonleh (14), Tameiya Sadler (10) and Kindyll Wetta (11) also contributed big points to the charge.
“The best thing about the balance on our team is not just the balance (with) X’s and O’s or on the floor, it’s their unselfishness,” Colorado head coach JR Payne said. “Let’s say that Netty (Vonleh) is not scoring in the first half and Kindyll is scoring in the first half; everybody’s happy for Kindyll to score knowing that once Netty gets going, she’s going to be impossible to stop.”
Defensively, Sadler had five steals and Vonleh blocked five shots, the most in a single game for a Buffs player since 2017.
With the win, Colorado closed its nonconference slate at 10-1. Things will get significantly more difficult from here, however, as No. 11 Utah comes to Boulder on Dec. 30 for Colorado’s Pac-12 opener.
