The Ducks face a potential trap game on Saturday night against the Cougars. Here’s how we expect things to go down.

Who Steps Up on Defense?

Question: The Cougars run a pretty balanced offense, and while they are certainly prone to air it out, their ground game behind Max Borghi is solid. With that being said, who do you think needs to step up more for the Ducks, the front-seven or the secondary?

Neel: I think that we shouldn’t have many worries about the Ducks’ ability to stop the run here, so my emphasis would be on the secondary and finding a way to slow down Washington State’s passing game. There have been some injuries throughout the secondary over the past few weeks, so it will be imperative that they can stay healthy and find a way to ball-hawk throughout the evening.

Smalley: The front seven needs to support the secondary and get pressure on de Laura. He’s been sacked a lot this season, so the Ducks should be able to get to him enough times to force a turnover or two. The Ducks can’t let him sit in the pocket and pick them apart. If they do, it will be a long night. I have confidence Oregon will get to de Laura enough to make a difference.

Patton: Front seven. Getting pressure on de Laura is probably the singularly most important aspect of this game, and shutting down the running lanes would be just an added bonus. Both sides of the defense need to play well in this one, but I think a big game from the front seven basically seals a win.
