Nittany Lions Wire preseason predictions: What will Penn State’s final record be?

Our staff puts their cards on the table with our final Penn State record predictions for 2022.

In our continuing look at some official preseason predictions, and after naming our offensive and defensive MVPs for the 2022 Penn State season, it is time to put our cards on the table with a final record prediction for the Nittany Lions.

And, at a quick glance, it is clear we are all in the same boat that this season is going to be more enjoyable for the Nittany Lions than the past two seasons have been. A winning season is what we are all expecting this fall, but just how many wins can Penn State pile up?

Here are our preseason record predictions for Penn State this season.

Prediction: 8-4

I think Penn State goes 8-4 this season. Pretty obvious losses here include Ohio State and Michigan. I do think they will lose to Purdue as well. Their first half, they have the potential to be a one loss team, which is what I have them going, 4-1. However, it’s the second half of the season where it starts to get tough. I think that the Minnesota game will be important, and that could very well be three straight losses for them for Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio State. I do have them beating Minnesota though.

Prediction: 9-3

I put my record on the line previously in a game-by-game prediction post with Athlon Sports, and I ran through the game-by-game predictions with my brief logic right here. But as a quick refresher, I think there is plenty of potential for a rebound season, although one that comes up shy of being in the Big Ten championship running. I think Penn State gets off to a solid start in September, but I think they return home from road trips to Auburn and Michigan with a loss, and I am not sure Ohio State is losing a game this season, so you can see where I have that game going as well.

There is a 10-win ceiling, I think, for this program, but I also would not be stunned with an eight-win season. So I’ll split the difference and go with an optimistic nine-win season.
