Just a few weeks after the tactical RPG’s first story trailer, NIS America popped up with a surprise Disgaea 7 release date. The latest game in the long-running series will release on Oct. 3, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and PS5. There’s no word yet on whether Disgaea 7 will launch on Xbox as well, though the games usually do end up on Microsoft’s platform – just a bit later than everywhere else.
NISA debuted a new trailer alongside the announcement, teasing a bit more of the story setup and the relationship between dual protagonists Fuji and Pirilika. Pirilika might seem like a self-centered tourist, but she’s actually on a mission to recover seven legendary weapons – mostly to get what she wants, so she’s still a bit self-centered. Fuji, meanwhile, gets a hefty payout in return. It’s a win-win for everyone.
NIS Japan hopes the same is true for the game itself. The team told RPG Site that they envision Disgaea 7 as a “back-to-basics” game, with a balanced focus split between a handful of new features, the series’ traditional deep tactics, and approachability measures that help players of all skill levels get the most out of the game.
One of these is the Jumbified mechanic, where characters become even larger than the map, which is meant to let players create effects across the entire map – something you normally can’t do in the series, even in Disgaea 5, which first introduced giant heroes. Auto battle is back, but with a cost this time so you can’t breeze through every battle, and the team also feels more confident in the 3D visuals, which were a sore point with Disgaea 6 players.
