Nick Singleton says he has a new nickname at Penn State spring practice

Penn State running back Nick Singleton explains his brand new nickname from his teammates

It has been a busy few months for Nick Singleton, the nation’s most herald running back to ever commit to Penn State. The newest addition to the running back group in Happy Valley was a highlight of the Class of 2022 and his early enrollment has allowed him to get involved in offseason workouts and spring football practices. And while it seems he is fitting right in, he admits he has been given a new nickname by some of his newest teammates.

“Yea, everyone is calling me Gatorade,” Sinlgton recently told Kristian Dyer of Rutgers Wire at the Maxwell Football Club’s annual awards banquet recently. “Journey Brown put a video on Instagram. He’s playing around with me as ‘Gatorade’ or ‘National Player of the Year.’ It’s all fun.”

The nickname, of course, is inspired by Singleton being named the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year for the 2021 season, an award he received just before putting ink to paper on his National Letter of Intent for Penn State during the Class of 2022 early signing period.

Asked if he feels any pressure with being so highly decorated, especially given Penn State’s struggles running the football in 2021, Singleton seems to take it all in stride.

“I know I have to keep my head down, be humble,” Singleton said. “Learn the plays from the other players, they’re going to help me a lot. I know I’m going to be fine.”

Singleton has collected a good amount of hardware prior to his first spring football practices. In addition to the Gatorade Award, Singleton was named the Maxwell Football Club’s national high school offensive player of the year as well as the Jim Henry Award winner as the top tristate player (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware). Singleton was among those being celebrated by the Maxwell Football Club’s banquet last week for his awards. He was joined by Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, Georgia defensive tackle Jordan Davis, and Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor.
