Penn State running back [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag] had a nice season-opening performance in Penn State’s road win at West Virginia in Week 1. As a result, his efforts were recognized for a weekly award from one of college football’s annual awards.
Singleton was one of four players being recognized by the Paul Hornung Award on the organization’s weekly honor roll. Singleton was joined by Arizona running back and return specialist Quail Conley, Pittsburgh running back and return specialist Desmond Reid, and Colorado star wide receiver and defensive back Travis Hunter. Hunter was the recipient of last year’s Paul Hornung Award.
Singleton touched the football 17 times in three different ways in Penn State’s 34-12 victory over the Mountaineers. Singleton rushed for 113 yards, highlighted by pair of 40-yard runs. One of those long runs was for a touchdown to start the third quarter on the right foot for Penn State. Singleton also touched the football on kickoff returns and caught one pass. In all, Singleton accounted for five first downs and a touchdown.
The Louisville Sports Commission presents the Paul Hornung Award to college football’s most versatile player every season. It was first awarded in 2010. In 2017, Saquon Barkley became Penn State’s first and only winner of the award. The last Big Ten player to win the award was Rondale Moore of Purdue in 2018. Other notable winners of the award include Odell Beckham Jr., Christian McCaffrey, Jabrill Peppers, and DeVonta Smith.
Singleton and Penn State will look to make another solid impression this week when the Nittany Lions host Bowling Green Saturday afternoon for the home opener in Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.
