Nick Saban is still the best head coach in college football

Nick Saban has a challenging season ahead of him, but he still ranks as the top head coach in college football

It’s hard for any fan of any program to deny that Nick Saban is the best coach in college football. In recent seasons, a few names have popped up and appear poised to challenge him for that title in a few years. Georgia‘s Kirby Smart, USC‘s Lincoln Riley and Clemson‘s Dabo Swinney are just a few of the many that look to ascend to Saban’s level.

However, as everything stands, Saban remains at the top.

Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire recently listed his top five head coaches in college football heading into the 2023 season. Saban sits at No. 1.

“When it comes to coaching at the collegiate level, Nick Saban is the gold standard,” Conn writes. “He has won 10 or more games over the last 15 seasons. Saban has also won seven national championships and played for three more since 2003. Despite Georgia winning back-to-back titles, it isn’t enough to dethrone Saban from the top spot.”

Recency bias may lead some to say Smart is the better head coach, but Conn properly addresses that by stating it’s just not enough to overpower seven national titles and 10 national championship appearances in his career.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Saban and Alabama football as the 2023 regular season approaches.
