PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers are continuing to work through the Kelly Oubre Jr. injury. The versatile forward was struck by a vehicle on Nov. 11 and suffered a rib fracture as well as injuries to his hip and right leg.
The Sixers are expected to evaluate Oubre Jr. soon to give a proper timeline for his return, but for now, he is doing little things such as riding the bike at the practice facility and watching practice as he recovers from his injuries.
The Philadelphia police department released some news on Wednesday that there is no video evidence that says Oubre Jr. is involved in a hit and run. The police are not accusing Oubre Jr. of lying or anything of the sort as the investigation is still ongoing. It’s just that there is no evidence at the moment and they are looking for anybody to step up and give them an idea of what happened.
Coach Nick Nurse and the Sixers are continuing to stand behind Oubre Jr. amid his recovery.
“I’m gonna believe Kelly at his word and all that stuff and focus on this game and handle things as they come,” Nurse said before Wednesday’s matchup with the Boston Celtics.
The team also provided Sixers Wire with this statement:
76ers spokesperson said Oubre Jr. continues to progress from his injuries and has resumed light physical activity with hopes of returning to play in the coming weeks. The organization added that it appreciates the efforts of local police for investigating the situation and the support Oubre Jr. has received from the Philadelphia community.
There are some out there who believe Oubre Jr. may have not told the truth entirely about what happened, but Nurse completely brushed that off.
“Like I said before, I’m gonna believe Kelly at his word,” he said. “I don’t have any other conversations or anything right now to comment on. I’m concentrating on this game. If some more evidence or anything else comes to light, we’ll handle it when it comes to light.”
It does bear repeating that the police are not suggesting that Oubre Jr. is not telling the truth about anything of the sort. It’s just that they don’t have any evidence. Anybody assuming that Oubre Jr. is lying is nothing more than an assumption at this moment in time.
“Listen, I don’t think it’s very fair to him to say that he’s made up some story,” Nurse finished. “I just don’t. I’m gonna believe him at his word. He’s one of our players and we’re gonna stand behind him and so am I.”
