Matt Groh was tabbed to replace Dave Ziegler as the New England Patriots director of player personnel in February. Groh’s promotion is just another example of staff turnover, as the Patriots lost Ziegler to Las Vegas.
As Groh begins his new role, he has a ringing endorsement from a name familiar to the Patriots organization.
Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio served in Groh’s role from 2008 through 2020. He was a key part of helping build the New England Patriots Super Bowl-winning teams over the course of his tenure.
Here’s what Caserio said of Groh during a press conference at the NFL combine in Indianapolis on Wednesday, via Mass Live’s Chris Mason.
“So, Matt’s really smart. He works hard. He has a good grasp of players. He has a good understanding of players. He’s been around football for a long time. Whether it was his dad or his brother Mike, he’s been around the game. His growth and development is really a credit to his work ethic and his thoughtfulness and his intelligence. I think a lot of people in the building in New England have a lot of confidence in Matt and what he’s capable of doing.”
Groh began his career with New England in 2011 as a scouting assistant. He was promoted to the director of college scouting for the Patriots in 2021. His rise among the personnel ranks seems to have impressed Caserio.
As the Patriots look to continue to build for the future, Groh will have a chance to leave his own mark on the organization.
