NFLPA shares information on COVID-19 tests, concentration in NFL markets

There are layers of horror to the coronavirus pandemic.

There are layers of horror to the coronavirus pandemic. On top of all the deaths and economic devastation, the spread of the virus has been helped by a second epidemic of ignorance bolstered by lies, conspiracies and disinformation from bad actors. Finding reliable information about what’s going on is just one of the many challenges Americans face today.

The NFLPA website has come out with a page offering numbers relevant to the disease and how it relates to the league. According to their information, 72 players have tested positive so far. They did not reveal how many have been tested, though.

The union also has shared info on the cases in each NFL market. At the moment, the three Florida teams and the Arizona Cardinals are at the top, which is unsurprising given that’s where case numbers are exploding.

Meanwhile, the host cities for the Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots and New York Giants/Jets have gotten a better hold on their transmission rates after months of struggling. Here’s a look at their map that illustrates how the south and southwest regions are getting hit hardest right now.

As for the Carolina Panthers, they’re on the higher end of the danger when it comes to the spread of COVID-19. The NFLPA’s info states there are currently 1,047 cumulative cases per 100,000 people in the Charlotte metro area. For North Carolina, it’s 858. That may not seem like a significant percentage, but it’s important to remember that the more people don’t take this virus seriously, the longer this is going to drag out.

The NFL seems determined to start their season on time. There’s no guarantee they will be able to finish it, though. If you want football at any level this fall, please wear a mask and stay out of crowded bars.
