After trading their first-round pick for DeForest Buckner, the Indianapolis Colts won’t be on the clock until Day 2 of the 2020 NFL draft when they have two selections in the second round.
There is still plenty of talent to be had early on Day 2 and while it remains to be seen what the board will look like, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein and Chad Rueter gave their thoughts on who the “ideal top two picks” would be for each team in the draft.
Here’s what they said:
» Round 2: No. 34 overall (from Redskins) — Michael Pittman, WR, USC
» Round 2: No. 44 — Terrell Lewis, edge rusher, AlabamaIndianapolis might be able to add a talented receiver like Pittman with “play now” talent and toughness. Lewis is a long but unpolished rusher with some injury concerns to sift through, but Colts GM Chris Ballard likes the type of length and rush potential that Lewis offers.
It has already been documented how well of a fit Pittman is with the Colts. He would be a strong option to be the X-receiver and a solid possession target while also having the physicality and high-point skills to be a contested-catch and vertical threat.
With T.Y. Hilton dealing with injuries in the last two seasons and in a contract year (though an extension wouldn’t be surprising), the Colts need an infusion of talent ready to step into a No. 2 role. Pittman has that kind of skill set.
On the other side of the ball, Lewis is a very intriguing pass rusher. He has a lot of juice and his length fits the mold that the Colts like in their pass rushers, but the injury concerns are what’s keeping him from being a sure-fire pick. There is plenty of upside to be had with Lewis, it is simply a matter of developing him and keeping him on the field.
