NFL writer ranked Bill Belichick as the best GM in the NFL for 2020

Bill Belichick is in the conversation for the best coach and the best general manager.

Bill Belichick almost always gets the credit he deserves for his coaching abilities.

In his head-coaching career, Belichick has recorded the third-most regular-season wins of all-time (273) and the most postseason wins of all time (31).

His six Super Bowls speak for themselves, but when it comes to his career as a general manager, Belichick is often criticized. No general manager is perfect and Belichick has had his fair share of draft busts and failed transactions. However, he’s also responsible for drafting some incredible talents and signing/trading for game-changers.

Rotoworld’s Patrick Daugherty took it upon himself to rank all 32 people who he deems a team’s “general manager” to decide who is the best of them all. Belichick finished where he usually does — at the top.

“As the rest of the league ties itself up into knots trying to catch up with the Patriots, Belichick makes staying on top look easy,” Daugherty wrote. “Belichick is not perfect, especially as a general manager. His roster failings are often wielded against him as a weapon, as if he is supposed to bat 1.000.

“A GM who does not make frequent, annual mistakes is a GM who does not exist. It is how you work around them that bakes the cake. Belichick left himself undermanned on offense last season. How did he compensate? By putting together the best defense of his entire tenure in New England. Belichick never focuses on what he doesn’t have. He takes his best shot at putting together a 53-man roster then molds and manipulates it as needed. It’s never flawless, but there are no excuses. Only Bill.”

Belichick’s track record isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough to show that he remains among the top general managers in the game. If he can succeed after moving on from his franchise quarterback, that might be what it takes for him to get the recognition from the NFL fans across the league.
