Leave it to Adam Schefter to throw something to the wall and see if it sticks. That latest something from ESPN’s NFL insider involves the Pittsburgh Steelers trading head coach Mike Tomlin.
I think there are going to be teams out there that have watched the way the Pittsburgh Steelers season has ended, and wonder whether they should call the Steelers to see if they should inquire about whether the Steelers would be willing to move on from Mike Tomlin and move him to another organization. I don’t think Pittsburgh will do that, that has not been what they’ve been about, and there’s no indication that they would. But I do think there are teams wondering whether they should lob in a call to see if they could stir Pittsburgh’s interest.
Trading Tomlin is a recurring speculative theme. The Steelers start with a decent record, implode facing tough teams, and limp into the playoffs to lose in round one. Tomlin’s coaching seat gets warm but never hot.
While getting some picks for Tomlin is a fascinating idea, it’s just that. President and owner Art Rooney is as old-school as they come. He seems content with an average team and is unwilling to do anything to disrupt that.
