The New England Patriots have been spiraling since the start of the 2023 season. Now, they’re sitting with a 1-3 record after getting bullied on the road in a 38-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4.
To make matters worse, people are beginning to call for coach Bill Belichick to be on the hot seat.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes that there could be a parting of ways if things don’t improve this season. Belichick and the Patriots have only made the playoffs once since the departure of Tom Brady. They struggled to an 8-9 finish in 2022, amid some questionable personnel decisions.
Not much has changed this season with the team once again struggling, but this time around, they have the hardest schedule in the NFL.
Florio indicated that Robert Kraft did not give a definitive answer at winter meetings in regards to the Patriots keeping Bill Belichick around long enough to break Don Shula’s all-time wins record, if the team continues to lose. This, combined with a disappointing 2023 season may be enough to show Belichick the door, as Florio noted on his “Pro Football Talk” live.
“This, to me, is very troubling. It’s a warning sign,” Florio said. “There’s still a long way to go, but if they finish last in that division, they don’t turn this thing around, they don’t make it to the playoffs, there’s going to be a mutual parting, I believe, between the Patriots and Bill Belichick when this season’s over.”
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out. It wouldn’t be dramatic to say that Bill Belichick’s job security is a bit in danger moving forward.
