As college football hits championship weekend, the North Carolina Tar Heels are in the news due to the reports of them meeting with legendary head coach Bill Belichick.
Per reports, the Tar Heels have met with Belichick twice already including once in North Carolina with Bubba Cunningham. Momentum appears to be picking up for Belichick to take the North Carolina job, which would be a huge move for the program.
As North Carolina wants to move quickly on a search, a national NFL reporter believes that if the Tar Heels officially offer him the job, he would take it. Here is what Dianna Russini wrote on the situation in a subscription article for The Athletic:
If we’ve learned anything from his time off the field, you still get a strong sense that Belichick loves talking and teaching football. But as it turns out, Belichick may be tired of waiting for NFL owners to call. He has had multiple conversations with the University of North Carolina about its coaching vacancy. He’s one of several candidates for the job previously held by Mack Brown — and the talks are not for show. The interest is real, and if Belichick is offered the job, a source familiar with his thinking expects him to take it.
The Tar Heels could wait until Saturday night if they want to pursue someone like Jon Sumrall. But all indications are that they want to move fast on this and get someone in this week.
