As some NFL teams look for their next head coach this offseason, former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton might be the hottest commodity on the market. After his years of work turning the Drew Brees-era Saints into a perennial championship contender, it’s understandable that a coach-less squad will want to acquire his services now that he’s looking to don the lead headset again.
One curious team interested in Payton might be a little delusional about their chances of actually hiring him. Per a report from NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, the Houston Texans — owners of the No. 2 overall pick after firing two consecutive one-and-done head coaches in an impossible situation — have requested permission to speak to Payton regarding their open vacancy.
And I just have one thing to say about such news: HA! What? This sorry excuse of a franchise should quit while it was never ahead.
The Houston Texans have also requested permission from the New Orleans Saints to speak with Sean Payton, per sources. He cannot formally interview with any team until January 17th. @nflnetwork @gmfb @NFLonFOX

On a serious note, with a big name like Payton available, he’ll undoubtedly want a relatively stable situation ready to win with a quarterback in place and generally competent ownership. None of those sentiments apply to the Texans, who might be good again. Eventually. Years down the line. That said, I’m sure the Saints would want Payton to pick the Texans, as they’d likely demand a hefty draft haul.
It certainly doesn’t hurt Houston to at least put in a bid for Payton, but there is almost zero chance he actually picks it as his next NFL home.
