NFL draft expert thinks Carson Beck ‘made a bad decision’

NFL draft expert critical of Georgia quarterback Carson Beck’s decision to declare for the draft

NFL draft analyst Todd McShay thinks Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck made the wrong decision to declare for the 2025 NFL draft.

Beck is out for the season after suffering a UCL injury and undergoing surgery on his elbow. Though he will need several months to recover, he should be ready in time for the 2025 NFL season.

“Carson Beck made a bad decision to leave early,” said McShay. “I texted a bunch of guys in the league … GMs (general managers), former GMs, scouts. One scout wrote back to me, one word answer: foolish.”

Beck has certainly shown NFL traits and there’s no doubt he’ll be drafted, but his injury will hurt his draft stock. His NFL career could be dependent on the situation he ends up in (as is the case for most quarterbacks).

“I thought he got better late in the season, as I said, but I don’t think he’s there yet,” McShay continued. “Played great in certain moments. I thought he played better late in the season, but he never, this year, played to the level that we, many of us, expected him to play to.”

Beck entered the year as a legitimate candidate to be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL draft. However, interceptions and ball placement haunted him, especially in the middle of the season. Beck kept his cool and helped Georgia win an SEC championship, but it feels like he leaves with room for improvement and unfinished business at UGA.

“I just don’t know that he’s ready. Why wouldn’t you take this time (to) rehab in the offseason?” noted McShay. “Come back (to Georgia) with a better supporting cast. They got a lot of young wide receivers. I know they’ve recruited well at wide receiver from what I can tell. Their offensive line will be better. They’ll be more balanced.”

There’s no guarantee Georgia will have a better supporting cast next season. It would be hard to match the group around him in 2023, which included Ladd McConkey and Brock Bowers.

“Is he as ready as he would be had he gone back for one more year at Georgia? And everyone I talked to, and my personal opinion, is he’s not going to be,” said McShay.
