NFC South Week 15 review: Panthers drop to fourth place

The Panthers have finally hit rock bottom.

The Panthers have finally hit rock bottom. After their sixth consecutive loss on Sunday, they find themselves dwelling in the cellar of the NFC South.

Here’s a review of what happened around the division this week.

Saints (11-3) beat Colts (6-8), 34-7

New Orleans demolished Indianapolis on Monday night, aided by a historic outing from Drew Brees. He set two new NFL records, passing Peyton Manning’s all-time touchdown record and hitting 29 of 30 pass attempts, a 96.7% completion rate. Tom Brady appears to be finally ceding some ground to the as yet undefeated Father Time, but Brees is still playing the position at an exceptional level. Unless the Saints lose a key piece like Brees or Cameron Jordan to injury, they’re going to be a tough out in the playoffs.

Buccaneers (7-7) beat Lions (3-10), 38-17

Jameis Winston is never going to be Brees. He has made some serious strides under the guidance of Bruce Arians, though. He threw four touchdown passes and averaged almost 11 yards per completion against Detroit. Tampa Bay has now won four straight games, but the competition has been lacking and none of their opponents had a winning record. Expect the Bucs to get a rude awakening from the Texans this week.

Falcons (5-9) beat 49ers (11-3), 29-22

Atlanta pulled off the upset of the year, stunning San Francisco with two touchdowns in the last five seconds of the game. As you might expect, it was another clutch performance from Julio Jones that saved them. He totaled 134 yards and two scores on 13 catches, including the game winner. As long as 11 is around, the Falcons are not a team that anybody can afford to sleep on, even Super Bowl contenders like the Niners.

Panthers (5-9) lost to Seahawks (11-3), 30-24

At this point it’s getting difficult to analyze Carolina because any honest assessment will sound repetitive. The Panthers keep losing in the same ways, most notably atrocious run defense, turnovers, inexplicable coaching decisions and Donte Jackson making costly mistakes. With the rookie Will Grier finally slated to start against the Colts, perhaps they’ll find new and more interesting ways to lose.
