On Tuesday, the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx will play in the 2024 Commissioner’s Cup championship game. The Liberty won the in-season WNBA tournament in 2023 and is currently in the No. 1 spot going into the game.
The Lynx have not won a Commissioner’s Cup championship since its inception in 2021. Both the Liberty and Lynx will compete for a $500,000 cash prize pool, with Coinbase committing another $120,000 in cryptocurrency. Each player participating in the game is guaranteed $5,000.
The inaugural Commissioner’s Cup was won by the Seattle Storm in 2021 (Breanna Stewart, MVP). The Las Vegas Aces won in 2022 (Chelsea Gray, MVP). In 2023, the Liberty (Jonquel Jones, MVP) took home the Commissioner’s Cup.
The teams also compete for an additional pool of money for a non-profit organization of their choosing. The Liberty are competing for Women Creating Change while the Lynx chose Gender Justice.
