New Sony patent suggests a Playstation mobile controller is in development

A two-piece shell for phones, from the look of things.

A new patent by Sony suggests that a Playstation controller for mobile devices is in the works.

A report by Video Games Chronicle  (VGC) shows that Sony Interactive Entertainment has patented a controller, which looks a lot like the PS4’s DualShock 4, for mobile. In a design similar to many other mobile controllers, the left and right grips are separated by whatever smartphone the controller is in the center.

The patent’s description states, “a left side grip portion and a right side grip portion gripped by the left and right hands of the user,” along with “a shaft portion that can be tilted by the user, and detect the tilting direction and tilting amount of the shaft portion.”

Take a look at a mock design of the Playstation mobile patent for yourself below.

It’s important to note that companies like Sony patent hardware all the time, so this is by no means a confirmation of a device that’ll make it to store shelves. It certainly might, though nothing is concrete until Sony confirms it. The company can  barely make enough PS5 consoles these days, so announcing a new physical product seems unlikely.

Mobile controllers would definitely make certain games easier to control, like Alien Isolation’s  upcoming mobile port.
