The New Orleans Saints fired Dennis Allen partway through this season, but weren’t able to salvage things before getting eliminated from the playoffs. There are eight other teams with head coach openings, could the Saints have a hard time convincing someone to take the job over anyone else?
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently ranked all openings in the NFL and listed New Orleans as the least attractive destination in the league, right below the dumpster fire of the New York Jets. The best job destination was considered to be the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Barnwell listed the cons of the Saints job as the roster and the salary cap, which is fair. New Orleans needs talent are virtually every position and don’t have a quarterback to build around. Along with needing so much help, they are strapped for cash. The constant kicking of the can has finally come back to bite them now that they are no longer winning. It will be a couple of years before the cap can straighten itself out again.
He did have at least some positives of the job though, namely having Gayle Benson as an owner and being in a weak division. Benson has started to catch some heat amidst the losing, but seems like a great selling point for a coach. She is extremely loyal and willing to open up the pocket books if it means bettering the team, or at least in making moves with the intentions of improving the roster. The NFC South is still one of the weakest divisions in the league and is without a team currently running the show.
