The New Orleans Pelicans officially announced Stan Van Gundy’s new coaching staff for the 2020-21 season on Monday afternoon. Assistant coach Fred Vison, who is credited with for his work with Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram last season, will remain an assistant coach as will Darnell Lazare while Teresa Witherspoon was promoted to an assistant coach.
Joining the staff will be Bob Beyer, Casey Hill, and Rex Walters. Beyer’s hiring was reported in late October. Hill joins the Pelicans from the Clippers after serving on Doc Rivers’ staff while Walters has bounced around numerous college programs, serving last season with Wake Forest. Walters was an assistant on Van Gundy’s staff in his final year in Detroit.
Joining the Pelicans as player development coaches are a pair of former players in Corey Brewer and Beno Udrih. Brewer’s hiring was reported over the weekend. Udrih has served as an assistant coach on the Westchester Knicks.
“I am excited about our coaching staff,” Van Gundy said via the team’s official release. “We have a great mix of background, experience, perspective and expertise. Four of our assistants have been head coaches at the professional or NCAA Division I levels. Five of our coaches played in the NBA or WNBA. Three coaches have institutional knowledge having worked for Griff, Trajan and current Pelicans players, while three others have worked with me and two bring us an entirely new perspective. I am looking forward to working with this staff to maximize the potential of our talented players.”
