There will be plenty of mock drafts between now and the 2020 NFL Draft. A new one from CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards has a familiar face for Arizona Cardinals fans.
In this mock draft, the Cardinals are the first to select a wide receiver and land quarterback Kyler Murray’s former teammate, CeeDee Lamb.
Larry Fitzgerald is not going to play forever. Arizona is planning for the future, which already involves Kyler Murray. What could be better than providing Murray with his wide receiver at Oklahoma? Lamb has tremendous body control and provides big play-making ability.
Lamb has been a common pick in mock drafts. That is to be expected for multiple reasons. The Cardinals lack a true No. 1 receiver and Lamb was dynamic at Oklahoma and would come in somewhat familiar with the offense and with a connection with Murray.
What to look at, though, is the scenario in which they land him.
Three quarterbacks come off the board in the first six picks. The New York Giants select tackle Tristan Wirfs fourth overall, so the Cardinals could go with another tackle or even the top defensive lineman in the draft. Derrick Brown and Javon Kinlaw are both available. Versatile safety/linebacker Isaiah Simmons already is off the board.
So in this scenario, the Cardinals would choose to take the top receiver over the best defensive lineman and second-best offensive lineman.
For some, Lamb isn’t the top receiver in the class, but he might be a better fit in the Cardinals’ offense than Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy.
It isn’t the first mock draft with the Cardinals getting Lamb. It won’t be the last.
