LSU will have a major gap to replace on the defensive front in 2024 as star defensive tackle [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] declared for the NFL draft.
A junior from St. Louis who began his career at Missouri, Wingo landed at LSU after a Freshman All-SEC season in 2021. While he was a rotational player in Columbia, he became a full-time starter in Baton Rouge, starting 20 of the 22 games he’s appeared in since.
Wingo was a Second Team All-SEC and Third Team All-American selection in 2022, but his 2023 season was limited due to an injury suffered against Auburn on Oct. 14. He missed the next five games but returned for the ReliaQuest Bowl, in which he made two sacks in the comeback win.

LSU’s defensive line could look very different in 2024 with the departure of Wingo and Jordan Jefferson. Maason Smith has not announced his plans for 2024, but it’s possible he could declare for the draft, as well.
