New Fire Emblem Engage trailer highlights heroes of the past

The latest Fire Emblem Engage trailer delves into a battle for the ages, literally, as armies fight for control of ancient heroes

Nintendo released a new Fire Emblem Engage trailer, this time highlighting the RPG game’s story, which seems potentially more involved than the “everybody’s here” nature of the first trailer led some to believe. You play as Alear, a divine dragon popularly called “Toothpaste-chan” by fans, on account of the protagonist’s red and blue hair, on a mission to seal an ancient evil, but in typical Fire Emblem fashion, you don’t set out alone.

Alear picks up a number of friends and allies on their way, traveling across the world to far-flung territories in a bid to gather ancient rings containing the essence of heroes from other worlds. These other worlds are games from Fire Emblem’s past, with heroes including Lyn, Marth, and Celica offering their aid, and potentially other classic protagonists such as Leif and Sigurd.

This assistance isn’t guaranteed, though. The trailer showed a dark version of Marth and even of Alear, both born from the rings falling into the wrong hands.

What these wrong hands intend by awakening Engage’s fell dragon remains uncertain, though it seems this new Fire Emblem might have a more straightforward narrative – good versus evil, small kingdoms facing down mighty empires, the kind of story classic Fire Emblem games usually told – as opposed to Three Houses’ more complex tale of clashing beliefs.

Whatever the case, we don’t have much longer to wait before finding out. Fire Emblem Engage launches for Nintendo Switch. Jan. 20, 2023.
