New England fires former Vol Jerod Mayo as head coach after one season.

New England fired former Vol Jerod Mayo as its head coach after one season.

He was fired Sunday after the Patriots (4-13) defeated Buffalo (13-4), 23-16, in the regular-season finale for both teams during Week 18 of the 2024 NFL season.

After serving as an assistant coach for the Patriots, Mayo guided New England to a, 16-10, victory over Cincinnati in his first game as a head coach in the NFL.

New England also recorded victories over the Jets and Chicago during the 2024 season.

Mayo played linebacker for Tennessee from 2005-07, recording 236 tackles, 21 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks, one interception and one touchdown.

He replaced Bill Belichick as the Patriots’ head coach. Belichick served as New England’s head coach from 2000-23, winning six Super Bowl championships and compiling a 266-121 record.

Mayo played for New England from 2008-15 and was the Patriots’ inside linebackers coach from 2019-23.
