Gilmore and Brandin Cooks were among those given new numbers Monday; the jersey assignments give clues as to who may not be coming back. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Ezekiel Elliott’s No. 21 jersey barely had time to come back from the dry cleaners, and its already been re-issued.

The Cowboys have assigned jersey numbers to four of their newest acquisitions, with a few familiar digits on some fresh faces for 2023.

Cornerback Stephon Gilmore will take No. 21 back to the defensive side of the ball, after Elliott sported it on offense for his seven seasons with the team. Hall of Fame corner Deion Sanders, of course, wore No. 21 during his run with the team in the mid- to late-1990s.

New wide receiver Brandin Cooks has been given No. 3. That jersey was worn in 2022 by cornerback Anthony Brown, who switched to it after wearing No. 30 previously. Brown is currently a free agent; if he returns to the Cowboys, it may be with yet another number on his chest.

Running back Ronald Jones will wear No. 32, a number worn previously by Cowboys running back Walt Garrison and cornerback Orlando Scandrick.

Offensive lineman Chuma Edoga will wear No. 71, the same number worn last season by Jason Peters. The 41-year-old Peters is also currently in the free agent pool; his football future is unclear.
