With the NFL season in the books, attention can now turn to the next big event on the NFL calendar. The 2020 NFL draft. No other sport has a draft more important than the NFL. Not only is it a massive media event for months in advance but the viewership of the three-day broadcast is immense.
You will see lots of mock drafts between now at the actual draft including this big seven-round version from Bleacher Report. We decided to dig into it but unfortunately, this mock draft really missed the mark for the Steelers.
Second round: CB Noah Igbinoghene, Auburn
Third round: WR Denzel Mims, Baylor
Fourth round: RB Javon Leake, Maryland
Fourth round: IOL Damien Lewis, LSU
Sixth round: TE Devin Asiasi, UCLA
Seventh round: EDGE Alex Highsmith, Charlotte
If the Steelers spent their top two picks on a cornerback and a wide receiver, the fanbase would riot. The Steelers secondary is stacked with players and even if the team can’t get Mike Hilton under contract (which they will) they still have four quality corners on the roster with two being elite.
As for wide receiver, if you are evaluating draft need based on last year’s play you are doing it all wrong. The Steelers receivers were a victim of miserable play by the quarterbacks and a run game stuck in neutral. JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington and Diontae Johnson will be different players with a full season of Ben Roethlisberger throwing them the football.
Overall this mock draft is a mess. Waiting until the seventh round to address edge rusher and the sixth round for a tight end is completely counter-intuitive. We are going to do a re-draft of this mock based on this one to see if we can do any better for the Steelers.
