New 14-team NFL playoff format now official for 2020 postseason

While we still don’t even know if the NFL season will all happen on schedule, the NFL is still moving forward with their plans to adopt an expanded playoff format.

Tuesday, the NFL made it official; they will be adding two playoff teams starting this year. The playoffs will go from 12 to 14 teams; that’s a bump from six teams per conference to seven.

This change eliminated a bye for the number two seed. Now only the number one seed will have a bye, while the number two seed will play on wild card weekend.

The current schedule would have three games taking place on Saturday, January 9, 2021, and three games taking place on Sunday, January 10, 2021.

This expanded playoff group means one team in each conference that would have been left out will now sneak in with a third wildcard spot.

This is the first time in 30 years the NFL has expanded the playoffs. They last did it in 1990, going from 10 playoff teams to 12.
