Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie has had an interesting career arc up to the conclusion of Brooklyn’s 2022-2023 season. He has served different roles over the course of his nine-year career including the recent seasons when he has been one of the better players on whatever team he was on.
When he came to Brooklyn this season in the Kyrie Irving trade, Dinwiddie went from being the second scoring option and secondary ball-handler alongside Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic to being the primary ball-handler and shot creator for the Nets. Dinwiddie has been in that lead guard role before during his first stint with the Nets and with the Washington Wizards, but he has had mixed success in the postseason in that lead role.
The one thing consistent with Dinwiddie is that he wants to play meaningful games in the postseason and that he wants to win a championship at some point in his career. He only has so much control over where he goes in trades, which he has talked about before in detail, but he commits to being a professional and doing his job regardless of the circumstances. During his exit interview, Dinwiddie spoke on what he wants in his career moving forward:
“The funny thing is, with me, every year, every stop, every next step in the journey, I’ve always played the game to win. And, it’s resulted in me wearing a bunch of different hats, right? Done just about everything. Sixth-man gunner, shoot, bench guy first. You know, reserve point guard, manage the offense, sixth-man gunner, you know, starting point guard. Kinda still managing the offense to primary scorer. Now, this past season, it’s been like, try to be the league leader in assists and then you know, then with Luka (Doncic) it was spot-up shooter. So it’s, you know, again, whatever happens, happens, I think obviously, anybody at my stage of career wants to play meaningful basketball.”
