Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks has a interesting offseason ahead of him as the main decision-maker of the Nets. In a season that started with championship expectations with the organization led by superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to a team led by young players with promise like Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, and Nic Claxton, Brooklyn has been able to recover well given the circumstances.
However, how the organization moves forward will be the main focus of this offseason. Brooklyn, along with his young players and considerable amount of draft assets, could go in two directions. It could either decide that the team is one player away from being back in title contention or it could choose to stick with the rebuild and invest in the draft.
Whichever way Brooklyn chooses to go, it’s clear that Marks is on borrowed time given the fiasco that was the superstar experiment. This will be Marks’ second time trying to rebuild the Nets from a team just good enough to make the playoffs into a team that has a legitimate shot of winning a title. In the meantime, Marks preached patience and poise to reporters during his exit interview on Sunday:
“Let’s just be strategic as we go. Let’s have some patience and poise. That doesn’t mean we won’t make changes to the roster. I mean, it’s pro sports. I think the decision is not entirely going to be up to the Nets, right? The players have to make their decisions as well. So, hopefully we’ve put ourselves in a place to attract, you know, our own group to come back. Attract free agents. I mean, I think they know what Brooklyn is about. And, you know, over the course the last five, six years, you know, Brooklyn’s certainly been on the map.”
