Nets legend Julius Erving believes Brooklyn is buying a championship

Nets legend Julius Erving speaks out on the Nets’ superteam.

NBA icon Julius Erving shared a strong take on what he thinks about the Brooklyn Nets’ superteam this season ahead of their playoff run. During an appearance on Danny Green’s “Inside the Green Room” podcast, Erving said that the Nets are “buying a championship.”

“They’re getting all these pieces… they don’t know at the end of the season what it’s going to look like or what it’s going to feel like, but they’re going to be formidable. You’ve got a team with six former All-Stars, and three [All-NBA] guys who have been there and succeeded in the playoffs.”

Although this does hold truth to it, the game is all about trying to strengthen your team as much as possible in order to win a championship. It has always been that way even when the Nets legend was playing. Many franchises like the New York Knicks, who actually have more money, are not able to lure top players to their team because there is another factor that plays into this: culture.

Many of Nets players have touched on this by noting that there is a championship culture being built in Brooklyn and it has been in construction for these past couple of years. Sharpshooter Joe Harris, in fact, said it was the culture that attracted players like Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in free agency two years ago. This eventually led to James Harden’s arrival this season, who stressed to the Rockets that the Nets were his number one trade destination.

If buying a championship means breaking a curse of not making it to the NBA Finals in about two decades, so be it. Sean Marks certainly won’t mind.
