NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets head coach Jacque Vaughn has one more message for his team as they embark on a monthlong stretch without their best player, Kevin Durant. Since the team doesn’t have many guys who are efficient with their mid-range shots, Vaughn prefers the team to try to score from the three-point line or in the paint.
“The biggest thing is recognizing when we do want to shoot more threes,” Vaughn said during his pregame press conference before Sunday’s 112-102 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. “Conversely, to shoot mid-range shots when we don’t have to.” The Nets have one of the best offenses in the league as they rank seventh in offensive rating (115.4).
One of the reasons that Vaughn wants his players to shoot more threes is because of the absence of Durant. Whenever the team needed a bucket, they could give it to Durant at the elbow or on the wing and let him go to work. However, with Durant out of the lineup for the next month or so, Brooklyn will have to attack defenses in different ways that suit most of the players’ skill sets.
