Nets’ Dennis Smith Jr. injures left ankle in Thursday’s preseason game

Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Smith Jr. injured his left ankle in Thursday’s preseason game against Maccabi Ra’anana and was later ruled out.

NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Smith Jr. came to Brooklyn to continue proving to everyone that he should be part of a rotation, especially with his defensive prowess. Unfortunately, he suffered a setback in that journey.

In Thursday’s preseason game against Maccabi Ra’anana, Smith injured his left ankle after just two minutes of action. Smith, 25, shot a three-pointer with 32.1 seconds left in the first quarter with the purpose of trying to establish a two-for-one situation.

Smith came down on the foot of a Maccabi player and appeared to turn his ankle upon landing. At first, the play looked like Smith just landed wrong, but after he didn’t get up after some time, it was clear that someone was wrong with Smith.

Once the whistle was blown, Smith checked out of the game and walked slowly to the locker room to be further evaluated. He was ruled out for the rest of the game in the second quarter.
