The Brooklyn Nets are in the middle of an offseason that plenty of fans are excited about now that the franchise is embracing their next rebuild. However, that doesn’t mean that all of the people within Brooklyn’s organization is taking the summer off as one of their guards is trying to win a gold medal for his country.
Nets guard Dennis Schroder led his native Germany to their first win in the 2024 Paris Olympics by beating Japan 97-77 on Saturday. Schroder put up 13 points and 12 assists in the winning effort as the German National Team got off to a good start in the first quarter by leading the Japanese National Team 28-21 at the end of the period.
Germany went into the matchup as the favorite and they played like it as they never gave Japan much of a chance to threaten the outcome of the game. The German National Team has been successful in FIBA play over the past few years as they finished in third place in the FIBA EuroBasket in 2022 and won gold at the FIBA World Cup last summer.
Schroder did get some help in Germany’s rout of Japan as Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner dropped 22 points and six rebounds while New Orleans Pelicans center Daniel Theis put up 18 points and seven rebounds. Germany’s next game is on Tuesday against Brazil.
