NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has been one of the bright spots for a Nets team that has mostly struggled after a good start to the season. Before Monday, Thomas had been playing so well that he was one of the nominees for the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the past week.
“It’s good because we’ve been getting wins out of that,” Thomas said after putting up 18 points on 4-of-21 shooting from the field in Monday’s 109-98 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Thomas scored at least 25 games in his last five outings, including dropping 40 points in Saturday’s 136-121 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. Despite the tough loss to Golden State, he still appreciated the recognition.
“it’s also good just to have the recognition to show that I’ve been working and playing the right way and playing winning basketball that’s leading to the wins,” Thomas said. “So, it’s good to have that recognition, but, I’d rather get the wins.”
The Nets came into Monday’s game looking to win their fourth game out of five which would have been huge for a team that’s looking to work their way back into the Eastern Conference playoff picture. However, the way that the Warriors dominated the boards (60-38) along with two massive performances out of Stephen Curry (29 points) and Jonathan Kuminga (28 points), Brooklyn had trouble keeping up.
Not to mention that guard Lonnie Walker IV (hamstring) and forward Cam Johnson (adductor) suffered injuries that took them out of this contest. Ben Simmons should be available to play in Tuesday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks in Kyrie Irving’s return to Barclays Center, but the Nets could be even more shorthanded than they were on Monday.
