Nets’ Cam Johnson says ‘there’s no excuse’ for Team USA’s World Cup loss

Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson sits down with “The Old Man and the Three” podcast to discuss what playing for Team USA was like.

Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson had an incredible summer as he signed a four-year, $94.5 million contract with Brooklyn as soon as free-agency began. He also could get more money out of the deal if he plays well as the contract includes $18 million in incentives that bring the deal to a maximum value of $108 million.

Essentially, Johnson earned his first big NBA contract and while he could have spent his summer working out and enjoying the fruits of his labor, he decided to help Team USA in the 2023 FIBA World Cup that occurred in August. Even though Johnson’s role diminished as the tournament went well, he still played well with the time that he received.

Unfortunately, the Americans did not win a single medal in the World Cup. As disappointed as America was that Team USA did not bring home any kind of medal, all of the players on the roster took the loss even harder as they had to sacrifice a good portion of their offseason to try to achieve success.

Johnson recently made an appearance on “The Old Man and the Three” podcast with former NBA player and current NBA personality JJ Redick and Tommy Alter to speak on his feelings regarding the World Cup:

“Firstly, there’s no excuse for not winning, right? It hurts us (Team USA) individually, collectively more than anybody, you know? It’s disappointing. You put a lot of time into those things and you want the outcome that you want. You don’t get it, it’s very frustrating. FIBA is a different game. It’s a different game and you see guys playing for their national teams. You can’t treat them like the players that are in the NBA. You just can’t.”
