Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson ranks as the 92nd-best player in the NBA, according to the The Ringer‘s latest version of its top-125 player rankings on May 1. He is the third Net who made the list behind Mikal Bridges (38th) and Nic Claxton (58th).
Johnson’s place on the list places him ahead of Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris and just behind Atlanta Hawks Center Clint Capela. Johnson, 27, came to Brooklyn as part of the Kevin Durant trade that gave the Phoenix Suns the superteam they wanted and provided Brooklyn with the young players and assets they needed to recover from trading Durant and Kyrie Irving.
Although Johnson came to the Nets with the label of being a 3-and-D type of forward, he showed that he could fulfill that role for a team and then some. Johnson did not shoot the three-ball as well as he had throughout his career, but he made up for that being displaying his ability to put the ball on the floor to create shots for himself and others. The former 11th overall pick of the 2019 Draft also showed an improved finishing ability at the rim, even through contact. Here’s what Michael Pina had to say about Johnson’s skill set as he enters restricted free-agency:
“Johnson is precisely what every good team in the NBA is searching for: an accurate 3-point shooter who guards multiple positions and makes plays off the dribble. Now on the Nets, he’ll help kickstart a new, post–Kevin Durant era. And even though he’s already 26 years old and in just his fourth season, Johnson’s game isn’t static. Whoever pays him his next contract—the Suns failed to extend him during the offseason and now Brooklyn is in the driver’s seat to keep him if they choose—will get someone who’s notably better than he is today.”
