The Brooklyn Nets have an important offseason ahead of them as they try to figure out how they want their future to be moving forward. However, one of those matters that they have to consider is how much will it cost to keep promising forward Cam Johnson?
Johnson, 27, is an restricted free-agent so the Nets have more control over Johnson staying in Brooklyn than with an unrestricted free-agent. However, even though Johnson is expected to command a contract worth at least $20 million annually, what if Johnson is offered much more than that by a team desperate for his services?
Depending on who you ask, Johnson is the second or third best player on the team as he and center Nic Claxton are impactful for Brooklyn in different ways. Johnson, the 11th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft out of North Carolina, has shown that he can be a vital member of a playoff team in a limited sample size for the Nets. According to Bleacher Report, Brooklyn is hoping that no other team overpays Johnson:
“The Nets surely noticed those numbers, but forward-needy teams did, too. That could take his restricted free-agency venture to an uncomfortable place for Brooklyn.
He is a solid starter and one probably worth keeping, but he isn’t a star. If someone throws him an offer sheet that would pay him like one, the Nets could be in a bad spot of not wanting to match but also not wanting to lose him for nothing.”
