Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule has two different points of emphasis. On offense, he wants to get more physical and powerful, knowing he needs to build the Huskers’ offensive line back to the standard of the glory days under Tom Osborne. On defense, Rhule has a separate central goal which is designed to counter modern spread offenses and the pass-heavy schemes we see in 2020s-era college football.
We talked to Cornhuskers Wire editor Evan Bredeson about Rhule’s plans for Nebraska football. On defense, the vision could not be clearer: Rhule wants his defensive players to be able to play multiple positions so that Nebraska has flexibility in moving players around the field in different alignments and personnel groupings.
Linebackers need to be edge rushers and vice-versa, Bredeson told us about Rhule’s vision. Safeties need to play cornerback and vice-versa. Playing only one position? Not good enough.
Mobility and agility are central to the Rhule philosophy on defense.
