Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson is back in the transfer portal for the second time in his career. The 24-year-old signal-caller out of Newcastle, Oklahoma, is entering the portal after spending just one season with the Cornhuskers.
Thompson in his lone season with the program, completed 173-of-274 passes for 2,407 yards and 17 touchdowns while throwing 10 interceptions. This offseason, the Cornhuskers, now under the direction of Matt Rhule brought in former Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims from the transfer portal. Sims and Thompson battled it out for the starting job this spring.
Prior to arriving in Lincoln, Thompson spent three seasons with the Texas Longhorns where he played in 19 games, completing 185-of-290 career passing attempts for 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions. As a junior in 2021, Thompson played and started all 12 games for the Longhorns, completing 63.2% of his passes for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Thompson was a four-star recruit in the eyes of both ESPN and Rivals coming out of Newcastle High School as part of the 2018 recruiting class. ESPN had him ranked the highest of any of the services, as the 221st-best player overall including the 11th-best quarterback in the country.
Now that he’s back in the portal, Thompson will look for the third program of his career. He should receive quality interest from quarterback-needy teams this offseason, as he’s proven to be a quality and serviceable quarterback in his career with 47 career touchdown passes and a career completion percentage of 63.5%.
With Matt Rhule leading the program, the Cornhuskers will look to improve upon a 4-8 season in 2022 which came under both Scott Frost and Mickey Joseph. Frost, once thought to be the savior of the Nebraska program lasted less than five seasons with the program after going 16-31 and failing to deliver a winning season.
