NCAA is stepping up.

With the NCAA putting a lockdown on its spring and winter schedule there has been talks about giving these athletes season which was cut short due to COVID-19.

There is now a report from Stadium’s Jeff Goodman that says the NCAA will grant an extra year of eligibility for those in spring sports.

This great news for a variety of athletes who unknowingly played their last game as a college athlete. Plus, there are those seniors who now can get back in the sport they love, especially the ones who are not going to go pro and can have a proper ending to their season.

For those wondering, spring sports do not include NCAA basketball and below is a list of spring and winter sports. It is not yet determined if winter sport athletes can get an extra year of eligibility.

There are going to be some logistical issues with scholarship limits and roster size but the NCAA likely will add some exemptions. A good explainer and set of questions to ask come from Chris Hummer of 247Sports.

“Roster size restrictions are a thing in college athletics. Division I baseball teams can only carry 35 players during the regular season. There are only 11.7 scholarships to go around among that group. Coaches allot those scholarships and roster spots based on impending graduations. But what happens if the seniors are granted an extra year of eligibility?

“That would create a pileup effect when it came to managing numbers. Scholarships would be restricted and difficult roster decisions would have to made. In many cases, high school athletes have already signed. What do you do when the numbers don’t add up? The NCAA would need to find an elegant solution, which would likely mean temporarily expanding roster sizes.”

This is a one of a kind situation with the NCAA stopping events and now on the verge of allowing an extra year of eligibility to those in spring sports and maybe winter sport athletes. It is good to see the NCAA step up and do the right thing.
