Whether you want to call it a rivalry or not, it’s clear UNC and NC State don’t like each other very much. That’s spilling over more and more into the recruiting aspect of college athletics.
On Wednesday, NC State landed a commitment from safety Brody Barnhardt. He picked the Wolfpack over UNC, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech and West Virginia among others. The Charlotte native decided to stay in state and commited to the Wolfpack. In the process, he took a shot at UNC.
Barhardt called the school “wine and cheese” type people, saying they aren’t rowdy like other programs.
“I like all the coaches at UNC a ton, but as school, they are more wine and cheese type people and I like rowdy people like NC State or Virginia Tech or Wisconsin,” Barnhardt said via Rivals. “If you go to a NC State game, it is going to be way louder and crazy than a UNC game if both at home.”
Ouch.
Barnhardt has been committed for just hours and is already adding some fuel to the rivalry on the football field between the two teams. He’s not the only one that has done it either.
Linebacker Peyton Wilson famously flipped from UNC to NC State and wasn’t a fan of Larry Fedora’s helicopter he used on recruiting trips. Over the years, Wilson has become an enemy for UNC fans, and it appears as if Barnhardt is doing so as well despite still being over a year away from actually playing in a game between the two teams.
I have a feeling a few UNC players will remember these comments down the line.
