NBA fines Sixers star Joel Embiid $35,000 for DX chop celebration

The NBA has fined Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid $35,000 for his DX chop celebration in the home opener.

In Sunday’s home opener against the Portland Trail Blazers, Joel Embiid was having a helluva night. He was dominating the Blazers on both ends of the floor to the tune of 35 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and six blocks. He was terrific in the 126-98 win.

In the third quarter, Embiid brought out his infamous DX chop celebration after he finished an and-1. The play helped the Sixers pull away in the third quarter and his celebration fired up the Wells Fargo Center crowd.

In response, the NBA fined Embiid $35,000. The league deemed the move “an obscene gesture on the playing court.”

Embiid will not stop doing this celebration because of a fine. Every once in a while, when the time calls for it, he will bring it out. It’s all in good fun for the reigning league MVP, but this one cost him a bit.
