NBA commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement on Thursday evening after the regular season was suspended until further notice amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Silver stated the hiatus will last at least 30 days as the league intends to resume play at some point in the future once it becomes safe to do so. The league came to the decision in order to safeguard the health and well-being of the fans, players and everyone connected to the game.

The NBA will continue to work with public health officials on the steps to take to move forward as teams and players alike attempt to navigate through this unprecedented time.

“This remains a complicated and rapidly evolving situation that reminds us that we are all part of a broader society with a responsibility to look out for one another,” Silver said in his statement. “That is what the NBA will continue to do, and we are grateful for your understanding and for being the best fans in sports.”

Teams have been advised to keep their players in town and halt all basketball activities for the time being. In addition, players have been directed to speak with team physicians and trainers at least once a day.
