Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, gave a little tease about what’s next for the beloved game studio.
During a recent interview with The New Yorker, Neil Druckmann said Naughty Dog’s next project will be “structured more like a TV show” regarding how the narrative is delivered. He gave no details beyond that, though.
Given that Druckmann is also an executive producer on HBO’s upcoming The Last of Us series, it’s understandable that Naughty Dog would take some inspiration from television. More often than not, video game adaptations are awful, but times are changing. Druckmann believes there are numerous reasons why many games-to-film projects turned out poorly.
“Sometimes adaptations haven’t worked because the source material is not strong enough,” Druckmann explains. “Sometimes they haven’t worked because the people making it don’t understand the source material. You think you need to fix it, and in trying to fix it you change too much, or you’ve lost what made it special.”
Last month, co-executive producer Craig Mazin insisted that The Last of Us was the greatest video game story ever – fully believing that its narrative is a strong fit for TV. The HBO series will premiere on Jan. 15, 2023.
