The Last of Us multiplayer game is still alive and well, and Naughty Dog is planning some kind of announcement for it later in the year, as the team gears up to celebrate the survival horror game’s 10th anniversary in June. The news comes in a new blog post from Naughty Dog that essentially just teases the announcement of an announcement, though it does have a piece of intriguing concept art as well.
“Later this year we will begin to offer you some details on our ambitious The Last of Us multiplayer game,” studio lead Neil Druckmann said in the post. “With a team led by Vinit Agarwal, Joe Pettinati, and Anthony Newman, the project is shaping up to be a fresh, new experience from our studio, but one rooted in Naughty Dog’s passion for delivering incredible stories, characters, and gameplay.”
The first piece of teaser art featured two characters firing rifles from atop a tall building in an urban setting, with what looked like San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in the background. The new art shows a massive cruise liner that has run aground next to a large stone wall lined with palm trees, possibly the same ship from the original art.
Either way, it seems pretty likely it takes place in coastal California, if the bridge wasn’t enough of a giveaway.
Details of the game naturally remain thin at the moment, but if Naughty Dog is planning a story-heavy multiplayer game, then we may end up seeing more of the Rattlers – the slaver faction that turned up in the final act of The Last of Us Part 2, in Santa Barbara.
Meanwhile, The Last of Us HBO adaptation premiers Jan. 15, 2023, and The Last of Us Part 1 will debut on PC – and Steam Deck, by extension – on March 3, 2023.
