Themborne and Naughty Dog are making The Last of Us a tabletop game in Themborne’s award-winning Escape the Dark style. Naughty Dog announced the project in a new blog post and said The Last of Us: Escape the Dark’s Kickstarter campaign will go live on Nov. 8, 2022. There’s no word yet on what the project’s funding goal is or when the finished product is expected to launch, but Naughty Dog did say an exclusive collector’s edition of the game is involved in the campaign, presumably as a backer reward.
The Last of Us tabletop game follows the traditional Themborne Escape the Dark format. It unfolds across a series of chapters, depicted on lavishly illustrated cards, and your choices individually and as a team determine the narrative’s course.
Themborne is holding more details back until the Kickstarter campaign launches, but the initial announcement included one image showing a handful of chapter cards and a few other telling details.
The chapter cards include locations such as the sewer outside Pittsburgh, the university, and the lakeside, where, in the original video game, Ellie finds herself alone facing a horrible new threat. The character cards unsurprisingly show Ellie and Joel, with inventory slots filled with med kits, baseball bats, and other weaponry.
Meanwhile, HBO and Naughty Dog are gearing up for The Last of Us‘ TV adaptation, set to begin airing in January 2023.
